The Indianapolis International Airport was named the best North American airport in it’s class for the tenth consecutive year. This year they also earned a prestigious Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) Envision Platinum Award.
The project recognized by ISI is one that HC+M’s Milestone Contractors knows well. We’re proud to share that our reconstruction of runway 5L23 marks not just a project completion, but an exciting chapter for our entire team. Every project we embark on is backed by our longstanding reputation for delivering quality work on time and on budget. However, this project gave our deeply held values, competencies and commitment to sustainable development an opportunity to truly shine.
Between April 1 and October 31, we embarked on a monumental journey. Our mission was crystal clear – remove, recycle and reconstruct the existing runway with nothing short of perfection to build an infrastructure destined to serve the airport’s needs for the next 40 to 50 years. Crafted with precision, the enormous 150-foot-wide runway was laid with four 37.5-foot-wide pulls, each a massive 22-inches thick. It was no small feat but we rose to the occasion.
The nearly 700-page blueprint had a distinctive focus on sustainability requirements. It was an honor to lean into our commitment to be stewards of the planet for the next generation. We salvaged and delivered an impressive 135,000 tons of recycled concrete, and 65,000 tons of recycled asphalt. Four million gallons of recycled water provided dust control and supplied our on-site concrete plant operations. Finally, we took the project to the next level using an innovative carbon encapsulation injection into the wet cement to encapsulate carbon and eradicate its presence from the atmosphere.
