At its core, this work is key to creating stability. Families that don’t make a living wage are, at best, living paycheck to paycheck. At worst, they are highly transient. Children’s education and sense of safety can be in constant flux. When life becomes unpredictable, it impacts people’s ability to concentrate on jobs and school work.
In the economy, it exasperates a source of workforce turnover because someone will change jobs for a quarter or fifty cents more an hour because it will eventually pay for shoes for one of their children they can’t afford now. For a state like Indiana, with good wages comes better healthcare, better educational outcomes, lower government subsidies, more opportunity for our people, better workforce stability for companies, and the ability to focus our resources on mobility for the state rather than maintaining a welfare state that limits mobility.
