“We want to celebrate Asphalt Day each year because most of the world interacts with asphalt every day through roadways, walking paths, residential roofs, airport runways and commercial roofing systems,” said Asphalt Institute President Pete Grass.
In acknowledgement of the first annual “Asphalt Day” brought into fruition by The Asphalt Institute, Heritage Construction and Materials was able to sit down with Audrey Copeland to discuss how our role in the industry plays a big part in creating a sustainable future for our community, environment and way of life.
In the heart of the civil engineering world, Audrey Copeland’s passion for the asphalt industry was kindled. Now, she serves as the president and CEO of NAPA, finding daily inspiration in the companies that tirelessly build and maintain the nation’s infrastructure. The importance of robust and reliable roadways cannot be overstated with $14 trillion of freight traversing the country’s roads — accounting for nearly 75% of all freight movement. We are the lifelines of the nation’s health, economy and way of life.
The asphalt pavement industry has set its sights on a bold target: net zero emissions by 2050. This commitment involves reducing emissions and ensuring the longevity and performance of our roads, collaborating with supply chain partners and harnessing the power of the electric grid. Driven by a member task force, over 30 companies have united in this endeavor, demonstrating the industry’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship.
Recycling is a point of pride, with asphalt being the most recycled material in the United States, boasting a 99% recycling rate. This fact alone speaks volumes about the industry’s dedication to sustainability.
However, the road ahead is not just about materials and emissions but also about people. A deep dive into workforce development revealed a stark need for more awareness about the industry and the opportunities it offers. The narrative that college is the only path to success is being challenged, as the industry showcases the rewarding careers available within its ranks. Companies are investing in their people, creating growth and career development pathways.
Audrey emphasizes that as we face the future, our industry must rise to meet the challenges posed by a growing nation and aging infrastructure. As the industry grapples with a knowledge gap left by retiring professionals, AI offers a beacon of hope, a tool to empower those new to the field with the expertise of their predecessors.
The message is clear: there are multiple paths to success, and the construction industry stands ready to welcome the next generation of talent. With a compelling story to tell, the industry looks forward to a future where sustainability, innovation and opportunity pave the way forward.
