Equal pay for equal work continues to be a struggle with women earning roughly 82.9 percent of their male counterparts for the same jobs according to a 2022 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The construction industry continues to break barriers, creating a culture and working environment where women are welcomed, empowered and equal to their male counterparts. While there is arguably still work to be done, women in construction make 95.5 percent of what men do in this industry. According to the National Association of Women in Construction, an estimated 1.2 million women work in construction, accounting for just under 10 percent of the construction industry in the United States. At Heritage Construction + Materials (HC+M), creating an inclusive and safe environment for all employees continues to be a top priority, and that includes welcoming more women into the industry.
When asked about encouraging more women to enter the construction industry, HC+M’s Chief Talent Officer, Kierstin Janik, was quoted as saying “To continue to grow and be successful as a business and industry, we need people. We cannot afford to deter or discourage women from being a part of construction. Our industry must create inclusive work environments where employees feel valued regardless of their gender, or any other factors for that matter.” Janik went on to note “A big part of that is creating compensation structures that remove bias and ensure employees receive equitable compensation for their contribution.”
HC+M opportunities are as great and diverse as its employees. From the research lab to the board room to offices and construction sites around the Midwest, the company values the intellect, innovation, insights, grit and determination its female employees bring to work each day. Creating a work environment that is inclusive and equitable are contributing factors that make HC+M an industry leader and employer of choice. Interested in a career in construction?
