From Asphalt to Innovation: Inside the I-65 Expansion Project
The I-65 corridor through Indianapolis is undergoing a transformative upgrade, and Heritage Construction + Materials (HC+M) companies are playing a pivotal role in its success. Milestone, the prime contractor, is working with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to expand five miles of interstate from the I-465 interchange to just south of the I-65/I-70 overpass as part of the I-65 Safety & Efficiency Project. Their work will extend through 2027 and includes adding lanes in each direction, reconstructing bridges and enhancing pedestrian safety – all while keeping traffic moving through phased construction. Evergreen’s role centers on the application of J-Band® void reducing asphalt membrane (VRAM). Prior to Milestone paving the surface course, Evergreen’s J-Band Operations Manager Cullen Hesterberg and his crew applied multiple 18-inch-wide bands at the lane-to-lane joints. This will seal the joints from the bottom up to prevent water infiltration, the leading cause of premature failure. This material solution to joint failure extends the lifespan of the asphalt overlay by three to five years, reducing the need for costly repairs. Ultimately, this minimizes construction delays for Indiana drivers. A skilled driver is required to apply J-Band precisely at the joint, and Evergreen’s team brings unmatched expertise to the task, reinforcing their position as the largest VRAM applicator in the industry.
