Respect The Zone. So We All Get Home.

Respect the zone. so we all get home. National work zone awareness week happening April 21-25

At Heritage Construction and Materials, our operating companies are hard at work on major highways, country backroads and everywhere in between this construction season. April is a crucial time for us to reflect on the impact of our actions both on and off the road. During this month, we proudly support National Work Zone Awareness Week, an initiative that helps raise awareness about the importance of work zone safety.

National Work Zone Awareness Week, held annually at the start of construction season, reminds drivers to exercise extra caution when traveling through work zones. Taking place from April 21-25 and hosted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, this year’s theme is “Respect the Zone. So We All Get Home.” We asked employees across HC+M what this slogan meant to them.

To Asphalt Materials, Inc. (AMI) Chris Aldama “Respect the Zone. So We All Get Home.” means everything to him. Chris is a passionate advocate for work zone awareness, driven by his extensive experience and personal loss in the industry. Having worked on the road for over 20 years, Chris has witnessed numerous near misses and close calls involving his friends and co-workers. These experiences, as well as the tragic loss of a childhood friend in a work zone accident, have deeply impacted him.

Chris hopes that by sharing his experiences he can increase awareness for those traveling in work zones. He wants his colleagues to be recognized not just as “construction workers,” but seen as someone’s friend, uncle, sister or father. These individuals dedicated to improving infrastructure are cherished loved ones.

“The question is, is ‘Respect the Zone So We All Get Home’ important to you? If it isn’t, why not?” says Chris.

In 2022, 53% of worker fatalities in the United States were due to being struck by a vehicle. The leading causes involved speeding, distracted driving and following too closely. In construction, lane changes are common on large projects. It is imperative that drivers stay alert when they see orange cones and other work zone signs. Below are some safety tips for motorists when traveling in a work zone.

Safety Tips for Motorists

  1. Slow Down: Always obey the posted work zone speed limits.
  2. Stay Alert: Pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of changing conditions.
  3. Avoid Distractions: Refrain from using your cellphone and other distractions while driving.
  4. Follow Directions: Adhere to the instructions of the flaggers and posted signs.
  5. Plan: Expect delays and plan your route to allow for extra travel time.
  6. Move Over: Slow down and move over for roadside and safety personnel.

Remember, these tips not only protect the lives of construction workers – they also protect the driving public. By practicing safe driving, you can help play your part in reducing the number of accidents and fatalities in work zones, ensuring that everyone gets home safely. And, please “Respect the Zone. So We All Get Home.”
