How Chris Hollenback and Heritage Research Group Help the Industry Adopt New Technology
Heritage Research Group, the research and development laboratory of The Heritage Group, stands at the forefront of innovation to turn big challenges into even bigger opportunities. That’s why HRG scientists like Chris Hollenback see tremendous value in building strong relationships with professional organizations working on the cutting edge of the road construction industry.
“Being at the forefront of new technology and techniques is where Heritage Research Group belongs,” Chris explains. As both Senior Scientist with the Pavement Research Group at HRG and the technical director of the International Slurry Surfacing Association, Chris is in a unique position to help others in the industry embrace innovation.
“One of my duties with ISSA is to update industry technical bulletins every year and create new guidelines as new techniques come into the industry,” Chris says. “For example, when we issued guidelines on using recycled asphalt, we could do that because HRG already tested the technology. We’re issuing guidelines that are based on HRG’s experience.”
In other words, as HRG develops and tests new technology, Chris works to create and distribute guidance through ISSA that will help the whole industry. It’s a powerful way to share HRG’s innovations.
Of course, the flow of information goes both ways. One of the things Chris appreciates most about his involvement with ISSA is how it connects him with some of the most brilliant minds in the field.
“I really value having access to these experts, and the chance to build good relationships with them. When I need new perspectives on a situation or problem, I have really smart people I can reach out to,” Chris says. “We’ve created a strong network within the organization, and we seek out new individuals who are coming into the industry to identify that next generation of leaders. I’m fortunate to be in a role where I can help support people that way.”
It’s one way Chris pays forward the support he’s received from HRG.
“If it weren’t for the full backing of HRG, I wouldn’t be in a position to be technical director of ISSA,” Chris says. “It’s made me better at what I do, and both organizations strengthen each other. Ultimately that’s all to the benefit of our customers. We’re in a great position to tackle difficult problems and keep making what we do better.”
Heritage Construction + Materials commonly uses slurry surfacing, a maintenance technique to extend the life of structurally sound roadways showing early signs of aging, such as minor cracking or surface wear. Partnerships with HRG professionals like Chris allow HC+M to access expertise in a wide range of treatment testing, for the best application selection for existing road conditions.
Slurry surfacing is an important tool in our pavement preservation toolbox. It prevents water intrusion, improves skid resistance and provides a renewed surface texture and appearance. Because it is a cold-applied process, it has minimal environmental impact and causes less disruption to traffic during application. The treatment is best used as part of a proactive pavement preservation strategy, typically applied every five to seven years, depending on road conditions and climate.
