Heritage Construction + Material’s (HC+M) Strategic Advisor Brandon Herget was recently appointed to serve on the Metropolitan Development Commission (MDC), bringing his expertise and passion for public service to help guide the city’s development.
The MDC serves as Indianapolis’ primary land use authority, overseeing zoning ordinances, redevelopment efforts and long-term planning for Marion County. The board of the Department of Metropolitan Development, a nine-member commission appointed by the mayor and City-County Council, adopts and amends the General Land Use Plan, approves redevelopment projects and makes key decisions regarding property transactions, tax abatements and urban renewal efforts. Through its work, the MDC seeks to strengthen communities, foster growth and ensure equitable development, shaping Indianapolis into a thriving, resilient city where people and businesses flourish.
Herget, who previously served as director of the Department of Public Works, said his appointment allows him to continue serving the city in a new capacity.
“When I chose to leave the City, I knew that I still wanted to find other ways to serve our community in Indianapolis,” he said. “Having worked for the city for nearly six years, I interacted with the MDC dozens of times and have always been intrigued by land use and economic development. Serving on the MDC will provide me the opportunity to continue to support the city and gain meaningful insight into how our community will continue to grow into the future.”
Although officially joining the MDC in February, Herget has worked with and presented to the commission for several years as part of his previous role in city government. His extensive background in public works and infrastructure planning positions him well to contribute to the commission’s ongoing efforts.
Herget’s career has been rooted in public service, with experience at the state, federal and local levels. His work in Indianapolis focused on infrastructure projects and community development, making his transition to the MDC a natural progression.
After years of collaborating with Heritage-affiliated companies and individuals, Herget transitioned to HC+M as a Strategic Advisor, confident in the company’s mission and leadership. Three months into his new role, he has been focused on learning the business, building relationships and identifying opportunities for impact.
Leveraging his experience from public-sector infrastructure planning, Herget’s goal is to provide valuable insights to HC+M’s operating companies. His background allows him to think creatively about new opportunities while addressing the challenges communities face in delivering infrastructure projects.
Herget said he is excited to play a role in shaping Indianapolis’ future.
“Knowing that we have so much growth in the pipeline in Indianapolis and potential opportunity, it is exciting to think that I will have the chance to be a part of that progress and help shape the future of our city,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation for HC+M’s support of his MDC service.
“It is great to know that our culture encourages giving back in meaningful ways, and I am grateful to be with a company that allows me to do that,” he said.
